The idea of a campus-wide colloquium was generated by the 2003 Task Force charged with reviewing which UNL programs provided support for the first-year student transition from high school to the college experience. One of the recommendations was to identify a yearly, campus-wide theme that would serve as an organizing mechanism for unit activities and events that would contribute to the theme. Dr. Patrice Berger, director of the University Honors Program and professor of history, led the effort to develop this recommendation into the Nebraska Colloquium concept.

The goal of the Nebraska Colloquium is to raise the level of intellectual discourse among UNL students, faculty and staff.
